On Wednesday, August 18, 2010 from 4-7pm, Logan County Family & Children First Council concluded a clothing drive and distribution resulting in 234 children receiving up to two outfits. Held at the First Lutheran Church in Bellefontaine, Ohio, families began lining up for the event at 2:30pm. This is the second year for the clothing drive and distribution. Last year, over 180 individuals were served.
The event was coordinated in conjunction with Logan County Board of Developmental Disabilities, Children’s Services, Family Court, and Consolidated Care as a result of many families expressing the need for assistance with school clothing for their children. “Over the last two years when school is about to start, we get dozens of calls from parents asking where they may be able to get help with school clothing. We were unable to refer them anywhere, because there are no programs to help with school clothing. We felt the need to respond and help these children get school clothing” says Angela Haver, Director of the Family & Children First Council.
The Council collects gently used school clothing all summer and then sets a distribution date. The distribution is open to any family in Logan County and there are no eligibility requirements or costs. In reflection of today’s events, Haver shared, “We did not receive as many donations this year as last and we had more children in need. We know that next year we need to recruit for more donations, especially girl and boy sizes.”
